How To Start A Vodka Brand On A Shoestring Budget (Updated)

How To Start A Vodka Brand On A Shoestring Budget (Updated) I really want to create a brand of gin. I want to do it remotely, make it scalable and as a one-man band. All on a shoe-string budget. But every distillery I have contacted has laughed in my face: “It’s too hard”, “the laws are too strict”. So I was delighted to be introduced to Patrick Ryan who has done just that, but with vodka. Edit – I have since taken inspiration from Patrick and started making my craft gin brand. Read about my progress here Ishka vodka tastes delicious and can be bought now. They are taking pre-orders for the first batch on their website. Plus I think the bottle is one of the best I’ve ever seen: Over to Patrick. How I Managed To Start A Vodka Brand I (Patrick Ryan) have spent the past year creating Ishka Single Grain Russian Vodka, all while continuing to do my day job working for the Irish trade department in Russia. In this article, I outline exactly what it takes to start a vodka brand (or any one-man/women spirits company). In an ideal situation, the supply chain will look something like this: With me, the brand owner, looking on and managing from the side. Sam did an excellent post a while back on creating and selling a physical product. Post: Step-By-Step Guide to Creating and Selling a Physical Product It is a bit more complicated to start a vodka brand: Alcohol is very heavily regulated. People don’t buy alcohol online very often (yet). However, the shift in consumer behavior in the spirits segment, towards niche brands, creates opportunities for would-be master distillers. If you can create a product with a unique taste and a brand with a great story, there is money to be made. Sourcing the liquid In spite of the current trend for gins and whiskeys in the UK and the US, I chose to start a vodka brand. There are several reasons for this: A lot of existing competitors are poorly branded and/or overpriced. Vodka is the easiest spirit to make, and make well. Russia is a cost-effective place to make it. There is an ownership opportunity for a Russian craft brand in this space. Setting up your own distillery complete with copper pot stills, hand-bottling, labeling et al. sounds great, but is costly, time-consuming and limits scalability. The solution is pretty obvious – you outsource it. You might be shocked to hear this, but about half of the five hundred or so gin brands available in the UK today are made by just a few companies. Such as Langley Distillery. Just because your product is outsourced, doesn’t mean it needs to be bad quality. In fact, it means the opposite as you can get the best most experienced master distillers in the world working for you. I started by sampling the vodkas currently available in Russia and then finding out who made them. This is pretty easy as the information is usually available on the back of the bottle. If not, you can find it online. Having narrowed my search down to six manufacturers that were making the best vodka I could find, I set about contacting them. I asked if they would be able to manufacture small volumes (1000 bottles per order to start with) under my brand. Then I did some due diligence and went with the one I felt was the best fit for us. I visited them and detailed exactly what liquid I wanted – the highest-quality spirit and water they had, bottled at 43% ABV. This increased our cost but ensured we had a differentiated product that stood up to any of its competition. How your product is made is an important part of your brand story. Consumers today appreciate transparency, so you have to be able to back up your claims with facts and exceptional taste. Negotiating Most suppliers do not want to do such a small batch. We knew this and came to our distiller with a decent rough draft of the product. This included a…

How to Start a Vodka Brand – Crafted Spirits

How to Start a Vodka Brand – Crafted Spirits Crafted Spirits When figuring out how a private label vodka would cost here are a few things to take into consideration. The first thing we want to think about is your budget. PACKAGING The liquid itself is not the most expensive part of the finished product, the packaging is. Packaging means all dry materials : Bottle, labels, cork, capsule, outer box. There are many different techniques for your design : traditional self adhesive labels, silk printing, coating, frosting, engraving, etc etc. Each technique has a different cost, and a minimum order quantity per order. The choice of your design will make your final price, it is very important to take this into consideration, as sometimes it can be a very costly design, therefore high cost of the final product, which mean high retail price, and hard to sell. BOTTLE We do advise to choose a standard bottle, from a glass manufacturer, because creating your own bottle, which means your own mould, will cost a lot of money (mould needs to be paid only once, but each size means one mould), and a minimum quantity to run a production which will be very high. When you choose a bottle, try to choose a bottle with the maximum sizes available. Meaning choose a bottle with a least 700ml and 750ml sizes, (750ml for America and RSA, where as the rest of the world will be 700ml). Bottles can go from 0.30euros/unit up to more than 2 euros/unit. Once you have chosen your bottle, and made sure the supplier has stock (most suppliers, since 2008, do not carry much stock), you can start your design. DESIGN Design can take different shape and technique, and this will be a crucial point in your costing. We do advise to not choose too many colors, the more colors you do have in your design, the more expensive it will be. To print a label means a minimum run of 1000 units, some printer can offer a small testing run of 20/30 labels so you can test your product. You can also print your design directly on the bottle, like Grey Goose, which is the most expensive technique. In the case of Grey Goose, they are using a frosting technique (which make the glass unclear), and then printing their design on the bottle, with a see threw widow at back of bottle. Before you do launch a full production, we do advise, a small test run of a couple of bottles, which cost around 900euros. It will be helpfull to see the final product, and to see the colors you have chosen, perception of colors on a computer screen and reality is often very different. CLOSURE The last element left on your bottle is the closure. Again there are many different options, which means different costs. From a screw cap (often on cheap bottle), T-Cork, tin capsule, aluminium, guala capsule, GPI closure, those are the main closures available. Again, between choosing a personalised capsule (with your design), and choosing a plain standard color, the price and minimum run will be very different. A personalised capsule – often in aluminium or tin (tin will be the most expensive material), the minimum order will be 10,000 units, where a standard plain color capsule can be ordered by 10 units. Finished product Cost price of vodkas can go from 1 euro to more than 7euro, which is a large difference of pricing. The cost price will determine your shelve price, and how much a consumer is ready to spend for your bottle. Keeping in mind that…

How to Create Your Own Line of Liquor

How to Create Your Own Line of Liquor Creating a new liquor is an art as well as a business. There’s the art of creating a new liquor good enough to attract customers. Marketing liquor is also an art, crafting a story and image for your line, perhaps designing unique packaging. You’re asking people who probably already have a favorite liquor to try yours instead, so your image and your product have to be appealing. Name Your Poison The first step is to decide what sort of liquor – whiskey, gin or vodka, for example – you want to create. Within that broad category, look for a niche you can fill. One way to find the niche is to ask yourself what you’d like to drink that isn’t available. Entrepreneur Chanel Turner developed Fou-Dré vodka because she couldn’t find a vodka smooth enough to drink without a chaser. If you don’t drink, do market research with people who do. You can start by asking your friends what liquor they wish was available or talk to bartenders about what customer requests are going unfulfilled. Create Your Liquor Once you know what you want, you have to create it. One approach is to talk to distilleries and find one that can create a premium blend that suits your concept. Turner visited multiple vodka distilleries and tasted more than 80 vodkas before she found the right one for Fou-Dré. The alternative is to whip up your own. Find a spirit that seems like a good base, then blend it or add flavorings until the results click with you. The Source of the Liquor When you have your formula, there are two options for producing it commercially: opening a distillery or hiring a distiller to contract-bottle your line. Contract bottling has big advantages when you’re starting out: It costs less. You can bring it to market quicker. The distillery already knows how to make good liquor so there’s no learning curve. You also avoid the legal requirements and paperwork that come with opening a distillery of your own. Opening your own distillery gives you tighter control over the product. It can also be part of your brand’s image. Knowing that you distill it yourself and then offering walk-through tours of the distillery can be powerful tools for building a bond with potential customers. Marketing and Design It’s essential to have a quality product, but marketing is also important. Your product’s logo, its name, even the bottle design can make it more appealing. Absolut Vodka bottles are instantly recognizable, for instance, as is the Coca-Cola logo. You’ll also need to think about your brand’s image. Is it a sophisticated drink for knowledgeable consumers? A high-priced product for the elite? A fun, fresh taste that’s affordable for everyone? Setting the price is part of that: You want a price that not only makes you a profit but also fits the image you’re trying to create. Market research is really important. If your liquor is a high-end gin, say, you have to know what brands compete with yours, and what will make yours stand out. How much can you charge for a bottle before people start picking cheaper competitors? Once you have the price, the branding and the liquor, you’re ready to start distributing.

How I Started A Vodka Brand Doing $100K/Month – Starter Story

How I Started A Vodka Brand Doing $100K/Month Hello! Who are you and what business did you start? My name is Umberto Luchini, and I am the founder and proprietor of Wolf Spirit Distillery, which crafts Blood x Sweat x Tears vodka, and imports Tom of Finland Organic Vodka. Our distillery is based in Eugene, OR (in a former laundromat). Our flagship product is Blood x Sweat x Tears vodka, hand-distilled by Ben Green using locally sourced ingredients: soft white winter wheat from Hamilton Ranch (on the Rattlesnake Ridge in Washington state) and purified waters from our local Cascade mountains. The copper column distilled liquid is then freeze filtered to achieve an exceptionally smooth vodka that manages to retain much of the character of the grain. The brand name derives from Sir Winston Churchill’s famous World War II speech — “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” — which over time evolved into “blood, sweat, and tears.” That kind of effort captures the spirit of both our entrepreneurial journey and our vodka. We created Blood x Sweat x Tears for misfits: people who are pursuing their own dreams. I am one of those people: I walked away from a very comfortable CMO job with a multi-national liquor company to found Wolf Spirit, which is named in honor of that kind of independence. I had become a misfit in the corporate world and needed to follow my own path. The first two years were — I assure you — almost all blood, sweat, and tears; but now, in our third year, we are off to the races: in the first six months of the year our vodkas became available in 23 states, and by the end of the year we should be in 40, and in important chain stores such as Total Wine and WalMart. Just to put that into context, that type of growth usually takes 4 years. What’s your backstory and how did you come up with the idea? I was born in Italy, schooled in the UK, started my career in France, then entered the spirits industry in Monaco. When I was given the chance to take a lateral transfer to the US in 2003, I jumped at it and moved to San Francisco. By 2007 I knew America was my home and became an American citizen. By the time I started my own company I had worked in marketing for about 25 years, 15 of those with Campari USA, the U.S. arm of multinational Campari spirits. For the first 24 years of my career, I had marketed products produced by others. Then, in the 25th year, I was tasked with creating and launching a brand for the company, and Espolòn Tequila came to be. I am proud to say that it is often called “the Tito’s of Tequila” for its rapid growth, and this success gave me the itch to create my own products, rather than market others’. I tried to do this within Campari, presenting many models to show how this could work, but we could not come to an agreement. So, in my mid-40s I walked away to launch Wolf Spirit Distillery, with the mission to live courageously with great purpose; to be honest; and, frankly, hell-bent on upending the system. Every day, I aim to inspire richer life experiences and to satisfy a literal and figurative thirst for what’s real. Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product. The first product I set out to create was a vodka, which is the most-consumed spirit in America by a huge margin. That being the case,…
