Chelsea Handler Says Therapy Made Her 'a Kinder, Gentler …

Chelsea Handler Says Committing to Therapy Has Made Her a ‘Kinder, Gentler Person All Around’ Chelsea Handler likes to keep it real. The comedian and best-selling author, who made a brand out of unabashedly doling out her opinions on every subject from politics to sex, insists she didn’t realize she could be polarizing at times. “Everyone’s multifaceted, and I assumed everyone saw all those sides of me,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. Determined to figure out any personal issues, Handler, 46, started going to therapy a few years ago and eventually came to terms with how she was shaped by the grief she experienced following her older brother’s death when she was 9. “I’m grateful for the self-awareness,” she says. “It really allowed me to just be a kinder, gentler person all around.” For more of Chelsea Handler’s exclusive interview, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, or subscribe here. Demi Lovato (top); Brandon Marlo and Chelsea Handler (bottom). Now, Handler is hoping to share the expertise she’s learned on her new iHeartRadio podcast, Dear Chelsea, co-hosted by her longtime assistant Brandon Marlo. During each show, the comedian and Marlo offer candid advice as they answer listener-submitted questions. Matt Baron/Shutterstock “It was so important for me to tell people, ‘You’re not alone.’ If this is happening to me, it’s happening to millions of people,” she says. “I think a lot of people, especially now, are feeling very insecure about how their life is going. And this is a direct result of the last year’s events. I know my social skills are rusty. I was out to a couple of dinners and sitting there going, ‘Oh, what am I going to say next?’ And that’s not me.” Brandon Marlo and Chelsea Handler. COURTESY Chelsea Handler Though she still embraces blunt honesty, Handler says finally dealing with the death of her brother Chet, who died at age 22 in a hiking accident, has taught her “a lot more empathy, for sure, understanding why people behave the way they do,” she says. “It’s certainly given me a lot of empathy for myself when I look back at times that I’m not so proud of. I’m not a person who lives in regret, but I have a lot of room for forgiveness now, whereas before, I would judge somebody a little more harshly if they did or said something that I didn’t like,” she continues. Handler had to give herself some of that empathy last June after posting a 30-year-old video of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan (who has a long history of making anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ comments) on her social media. The comedian had watched a clip of Farrakhan discussing racial oppression “and I thought, ‘Wow, what a powerful message.’ I didn’t take into context his persona and everything he represented,” she says. Handler later apologized and deleted the video. “I didn’t realize how much damage he had caused, and how anti-Semitic he was,” she adds. “I just simply hadn’t done my research. Once it was brought to my attention I felt awful.” Chelsea Handler. Chelsea Handler Instagram Throughout any challenges Handler…

'Dear Chelsea' Podcast Stars Chelsea Handler & Brandon Marlo

Chelsea Handler and Brandon Marlo Offer Unfiltered Advice in “Dear Chelsea” Podcast Watch out, Abby! There’s a new advice column in town that promises to offer empowering and honest advice to those seeking guidance. Extra emphasis on honest. Dear Chelsea is a new podcast by comedian, best-selling author and television host Chelsea Handler. With her trusty assistant and gay sidekick Brandon Marlo as her co-host, the duo will answer listener’s burning questions and offer advice on breakups, office gossip, fashion trends, etc. Nothing is off-limits. Handler and Marlo are not new to the podcast world. They previously co-hosted Life Will Be the Death of Me, a series named after Handler’s autobiography and dedicated to reflecting on a radical year in the comedian’s life. Now, the pair are pivoting their focus away from their personal lives to instead concentrate on giving life advice to their listeners. Handler is known for being unfiltered and unapologetically herself, meaning listeners who decide to send in their personal questions should be prepared for a candid response. “This is us, in our element. It’s like happy hour therapy with your friends and we aren’t holding back,” Marlo says. “Listeners will get an inside look at our dynamic, personal anecdotes and how we really handle situations with everyone around us. You may not like what we say, but it will be coming from an honest and loving place. Well, usually loving sometimes annoyed.” “Dear Chelsea” is distributed by iHeartPodcast Network, the leading audio media company in America. “iHeartRadio has been a great place for me to share all of my wild, unvarnished thoughts,” Handler says. “I’m excited to start this journey with Dear Chelsea to help people figure out what they need in life — I’m more than happy to be that kick in the pants or shove that will give someone a new perspective on a situation and help them to make a decision.” Related | Chelsea Handler Donates Tour Merch Proceeds to True Colors United If that’s not enough, Marlo and Handler will have surprise visits from celebrity and expert guests who will help weigh in on the situation and steer listeners in the best direction. For Marlo, having multiple voices is important when offering advice, even if they don’t see eye-to-eye. “Growth comes from being challenged in the way you think or feel — with that said, we will not always agree on how to handle a situation, and that’s okay,” he says. “We work in concert to find the best solution for each person. And yes, one of us is the voice of reason and the other is brutally honest, but you’ll have to listen in to see who’s who. It might surprise you. ” Marlo first met Handler on her Uganda Be Kidding Me book tour. He slipped Handler his resume and inquired about an internship on her hit show Chelsea Lately, and the rest is history. Marlo was recently credited as an associate producer on her latest stand-up special, Evolution, on HBO Max. Comedian Chelsea Handler delivers comedy with a dose of …

Comedian Chelsea Handler delivers comedy with a dose of therapy – The San Diego Union-Tribune Some people say that life is too short, but comedian Chelsea Handler declares that it’s too long. She blames annoying people for making her existence tedious: Like folks who say “anyways.”“It’s not a word.”And room service attendants who serve chicken fingers with a knife and fork.“It’s shaming.”Then, there are the guys who show up for a date wearing flip flops with jewelry, order an ahi tuna sandwich for breakfast and ask her to name her top 10 favorite bands. These are all observations that cause Handler to cringe and her fan base to laugh, and the kinds of subjects she tackles on her “Vaccinated and Horny Tour.” For those who will miss her sold-out Sunday show at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, there’s also her HBO Max special, “Evolution,” her new book, “Life Will be the Death of Me … and You Too!” and her weekly advice podcast, “Dear Chelsea,” distributed by the iHeart Radio Podcast Network.Handler prepared material for The HBO Max special by performing her stand-up comedy in small clubs on the East Coast.“The special was just over an hour and I had to economize my time,” Handler says.“So, a lot of what was left out was repurposed in the new show I’m currently touring with. I talk a lot about my dogs and their interest in getting a restraining order against me. They think my housekeeper is their adoptive mother and I’m just an au pair who roams through the house every couple of weeks.”‘An honest, authentic way’ Comedy is a serious business, a mostly-male art form often inspired by tragedy or a sense of outrage. Early notable female comedians such as Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers and Roseanne Barr got laughs with self-deprecating humor or narratives about husbands and family life. But Handler is one of the contemporary female comics who explores a wider realm of topics and mediums. She is bawdy and unrestrained about women’s sexuality, racism, drugs and social issues. More than once, she has had to submit a public apology for remarks that crossed the political correctness line. While that hasn’t made a difference in her success, it makes writing comedy — a medium that can expose social and political inconsistencies with humor — more challenging.“We aren’t allowed to say what we want,” Handler says. “It’s whatever. I don’t subscribe to the theory of we can’t say anything. You can say a lot and be very clever about it, so why not try?” (Associated Press) Handler has made a career of trying. She has worked as a producer, a talk show host (“Chelsea Lately”), a sitcom actress (“Are You There, Chelsea?”) and a stand-up comedian with numerous specials to her credit. She’s authored a half dozen books, most on the New York Times best-seller list.“I’m really into language and reading,” says Handler, who is currently perusing author Jory Fleming’s “How to Be Human: An Autistic Man’s Guide to Life” and “Bestiary” by K-Ming Chang.(She’s also is writing the forward for Shelly Tygielski’s “Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World.”)“I probably read more than people would think,” Handler says. “I’m fascinated by words and language. That’s why I like to communicate in so many different mediums. I like to talk. I like to write. I like to perform. It all works for me and I feel like when you recognize what you are good at doing, then you have to focus on doing that in an honest, authentic way.”Earlier this year, Handler launched the advice podcast “Dear Chelsea” with co-host Brandon Marlo, who is also Handler’s calm and collected personal assistant. Together, they offer advice to callers who submit online questions. She said one of the more interesting calls they got was from a transgender man who struggled with smoking marijuana on a daily basis.“I said, ‘I’ll take a 30-day break from weed with you in solidarity,’” Handler says. “He did it and…
